Snow and Ice

Snow and ice processes are being researched in the external pageHigh Mountain Glaciers and Hydrology (HIMAL) Group led by Dr Francesca Pellicciotti at the Forest, Snow and Landscape Research insitute WSL in Birmensdorf. The HIMAL group supports the Chair with Master student supervision in high mountain hydrology research.

Previous research at the Chair focussed on the role of glaciers for the water cycle of big Asian river systems (UNCOMMUN) and rivers in the Dry Andes of central Chile. The group led by Dr Pellicciotti at the Chair from 2005 to 2017 was developing models for glacier ablation and collecting ground data across mountain ranges to improve and validate the modelling approaches. The PhDs graduated in snow and ice processes at the Chair were

2017: Alvaro Ignacio Ayala Ramos - The role of surface sublimation in the summer mass balance of glaciers in the subtropical semiarid Andes

2017: Pascal Buri - Understanding the role of ice cliffs on ablation patterns and mass balance of debris-covered glaciers in a Himalayan catchment

2016: Ilaria Clemenzi - Understanding and Modelling Snow Accumulation on Glaciers

2014: Silvan G. Ragettli - Modeling the response of high-elevation, glacierized watersheds to climate change: A new methodological framework applied to the Andes and the Himalaya

2012: Marco Carenzo - Distributed modelling of changes in glacier mass balance and runoff

2008: Ružica Dadic - Monitoring and modeling snow accumulation processes in glacierized Alpine basins

2004: Francesca Pellicciotti - Development of an ice and snow melt model for long-term analysis of water resources from highly glacierised basins
